The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship 2023-2024 is a tuition-fee Masters’s scholarship for international students. This scholarship provides an average amount of 15,000 euros per year.

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship invites applications from international students to pursue a master’s degree at Leiden University in the Netherlands. These scholarships are fully funded and awarded to meritorious students.

The number and type of scholarship awarded depend on the budget available to each faculty department. Leiden University was founded in 1575 and is one of Europe’s leading international research universities.

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LexS) provides the recipient with the following benefits:

  • €15,000 tuition fee
  • €10,000 in tuition fees
  • Total tuition fee minus statutory tuition fee
  • Also, apply for the Harvard University MBA Scholarship and receive financial assistance of US$95,000 for tuition fees.

Eligibility Criteria for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship

To qualify for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LexS), candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

Required Language: English

  • Eligible countries: Non-EU/EEA international students
  • In previous academic studies, the student must have achieved excellent study results relevant to the program in which the student wishes to enroll. As an indicator, the student will be in the top 10% for the relevant program pursued abroad.
  • Students must have achieved excellent study results in their previous studies, relevant to the Master’s program they are applying for. As an indicator, the student is among the top 10% of graduates in their previous study program. Note: Proof of ranking is not required – this information is pure to show the level of competition.
  • The student will hold a non-EU/EEA passport and will not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans “study financing”. For more information visit: www.duo.nl. This does not apply to Advanced Masters, the LExS application for these programs is open to all nationalities.
  • Continuity of LExS is not guaranteed when a student changes their degree program during a program of study. Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and the final decision will be made by the Faculty Selection Committee (Languages). If the change is made before the student is registered for the program of study, the LExS scholarship will be canceled and the student must reapply for the scholarship.
  • The LExS is only valid for the period the student is registered as a full-time student at Leiden

University within the timeframe of the study program.

  • LExS awarded for the academic year specified in the decision letter cannot be transferred to another academic year or to the next intake within the same academic year. If a student has been granted LExS for September (or February) intake and decides to postpone his participation in the program of study, the LExS will be canceled. Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and the final decision will be made by the Faculty Selection Committee (Languages).
  • A student is not permitted to receive any additional full scholarship for the same program, other than a partial scholarship, where this must be confirmed in advance in writing. The student should inform Leiden University if any other full scholarships such as the Netherlands Fellowship Program, Jean Monnet, etc. have been awarded and which scholarships have been accepted.
  • For a program lasting more than one year, the student needs to obtain at least 60 ECTS in the first year of study to retain the right to LExS for the following academic year. In cases where there is any uncertainty about the number of ECTS criteria for satisfactory progress and the time and method of measuring progress will be determined by the Leiden University Selection Committee.
  • A student is allowed to submit multiple scholarship applications at a time. However, it is not possible to combine scholarships provided or sponsored by Leiden University. It is related to the following scholarship programs: Orange Tulip – China and CEU Presidium Libertates. Also, it is not possible to combine LExS with scholarships that are provided on bilateral agreements with educational institutions, or any other scholarships that may be provided or sponsored by Leiden

University in the near future.

  • The student must comply with Dutch visa regulations.
  • Students enrolled in another master’s program at Leiden University will not be awarded the LExS, except for students applying for a master’s program for which a specific previous master’s

program or work experience is required.

  • Leiden University must be informed as soon as possible of any change in nationality, type of residence permit, and/or possible “study financing” support throughout the academic year.
  • If the student terminates the studies prematurely, any request for a tuition fee refund will be made to Leiden University and will be made in accordance with the “Regeling inschrijving, college-en examen-geld” for the applicable academic year. The student must submit the de-registration form to Leiden University. If applicable, the student will be reimbursed the tuition fee at a later date.

Scholarship on a proportional basis.

  • During studies at Leiden University, the student will actively participate in activities promoting LExS.
  • The student has to accept the awarded LExS scholarship by filling out the ‘Acceptance Form LExS’.

How to apply for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship?

To apply for a Leiden University Excellence Scholarship please follow the instructions below:

  • Apply online for admission to a master’s program at Leiden University and pay the application fee, if applicable.
  • In the scholarship section of your online application, indicate that you wish to apply for LExS.
  • Upload your LExS motivation letter as per the instructions in your online application. This is a maximum word document. 500 words, in which you explain why you should be considered for the award.
  • Before the LExS application deadline, submit your online application containing your LExS application.
  • If you apply to more than one study program and wish to apply for LExS for each, clearly indicate this in each application and upload one LExS motivation letter for each.
