Eligibility Criteria Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Scholarships

To be eligible for Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Required Language: English and Japanese.

  • Eligible Countries: All countries of the world. Students who do not have Japanese citizenship.
  • In principle, a student enrolled in a professional graduate school is not eligible to apply. However, a student who can submit a research project is eligible to apply.
  • To be eligible, a student applying for a Ph.D. program must have been born after August 31, 1984. A student applying for the Master’s program must have been born after August 31, 1989.
  • The student must have a strong intention to serve in his home country after graduation. This doesn’t mean being guaranteed a job in advance or returning to your home country immediately after graduating from university.
  • The student should have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill and should attend events organized by the Foundation and participate in the network as an alumnus.
  • The student should be able to hold a daily conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be conducted in Japanese. (no discount)

How to Apply for Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Awards?

Please follow the following important steps to get a scholarship for foreign students:

(1) Enter “Web Application System”. Fill out the application form and upload the following required documents.

Academic Transcript:

  • i) from the undergraduate course of the university where you have graduated and ii) any other course you are currently taking or have taken in the past. If you have transferred to a university, a transcript from the previous school is required. All applicants must provide at least i) Photocopies of academic transcripts from undergraduate courses are acceptable.
  • A scholarship application form, a resume, and a personal information form (1 set of 3 pages); Make sure to attach your photograph with the application form. Download the above form provided on the website. Type or handwrite them in Japanese.
  • Research Plan: In Japanese, explain the focus on the following four points. i) your research outline; ii) expected schedule between now and graduation; iii) plans and goals for the future; iv) Research you have done in the past (if any). 2 ~ 4 pages are preferable. Either typed or handwritten is available.

  • A letter of recommendation from an academic supervisor. (This cover letter should mention the applicant’s academic achievements, character/personality, and potential for the future.) There is no limit to the number of pages or styles. If your previous academic supervisor knows you well, you can ask him/her for your letter of recommendation.
  • Enrollment certificate or admission letter. In case the entrance examination has not yet been held, or the successful candidates in the entrance examination have not been announced before applying for this scholarship, write the date of the examination or the announcement. The result is below the application form. If you are already enrolled in a graduate school, please provide a current enrollment certificate. (Photocopies are acceptable.)
  • A letter of recommendation from an academic supervisor. (This cover letter should mention the applicant’s academic achievements, character/personality, and potential for the future.) There is no limit to the number of pages or styles. If your previous academic supervisor knows you well, you can ask him/her for your letter of recommendation.
  • For 1, 4, and 5: Please prepare those documents in Japanese or English. If you have your documents in other languages, please attach a Japanese or English translation.
  • (2) After the documents are submitted, an application number will be issued, and a PDF of your application form will be generated. Please save the PDF file as you will need it when the result is declared on our website.
